A Weekend in Saugatuck | How to Spend it | LGBTQ Friendly Travels

We spent a weekend in Saugatuck, Michigan, for Hannah's birthday. We are both big fans of fall so we went mid October, which is when the foliage is the absolute best. The weather was starting to get cooler, so sweaters, jackets, and a raincoat are needed. The best part about Saugatuck is it is only two hours from Chicago, Illinois, so it's a quick scenic drive. Usually it is a lake town and very busy in summer months, but October is a shoulder season. The town puts lights up on main street and is very LGBTQ+ friendly. We also brought our pups, and they were welcome in most shops!

We stayed in a vacation rental that was literally across the street from the Main Street. We crossed the road , went down a set of stairs, and were on the well lit road with all of the shops. Saugatuck has a sister town of Douglas that also provides a cute little quaint town right across the lake. If you are wanting a stay to mingle, there are bed and breakfasts all through the town that can give you that community feeling.

The best way to get around Saugatuck is to walk. Everything you need is right around you. If you are wanting to venture outside of Saugatuck and Douglas, you will need to have a ride share or rental to do so, as the next towns are 20 minutes away. We did drive our car to Saugatuck, and we only used it to get to a breakfast place that was right outside of Saugatuck's town area and it was raining. We would have attempted the walk if it was not raining.

  • Saugatuck Sand Dunes : You can hop in a large jeep and do a Sand dunes ride in certain times of the year. If you cannot go to the rides, then you can visit the Sand Dunes, which are so neat. The lake is beautiful to see any time of the year.

  • Town Events: Saugatuck and Douglas have some of the neatest events, including New Year's bash and Roaring 20s parties. They have local breweries who are constantly doing things year around.

  • Visit the Local Art : Saugatuck had the most beautiful art shops. We spent hours walking around and just looking at the shops. PS- one is a Ralph Lauren store and the smells alone consumed us.
